External Hard drive freezes computer

Question:  External Hard drive freezes computer - I have a 500 GB WD external hard disk that i have been using for 2 years now. It has around 17 GB of data in the form of family pictures, videos, music, movies and some important research documents collected over a period of time. Today when i connected it to my HP 431 laptop and tried to access it by clicking on 'My Computer' - it just hanged. Same result when i connected it to my desktop. This data is extremely important to me. How can i get it back ?
